How We Paint Doors, Step by Step
First, the door surface is lightly sanded to dull the finish — the critical step that lets new paint grip. Handles, hinges and glass panels are masked off. A suitable primer follows; on yellowed panel doors in particular, a stain-blocking primer stops the yellowing from bleeding into the new coat. For the topcoat, a yellowing-resistant, silk-matt water-based door paint is applied in thin layers. The result: a smooth door with no brush marks, looking like it just left the factory.
Which Doors Can Be Painted?
Panel doors, solid and veneered wooden doors, MDF and lacquered doors and steel doors can all be painted. On steel doors we use a primer and paint system designed for metal, with weather-resistant products on the exterior face. Colour changes are possible too: switching from white to anthracite, or from wood tones to modern greys, is one of our most requested jobs. Paint the door or replace it?
Any door with a sound body can be renewed with paint, at a fraction of the cost of replacement. For doors that are swollen, water-damaged or broken we recommend replacement — and we tell you honestly at the site visit.
Are the doors removed for painting?
Usually they are painted in place; where needed, we take them off their hinges and paint them flat for an even smoother finish.
How many days does it take?
All the interior doors of a standard apartment are usually finished in 1-2 days; we give you an exact timeframe at the site visit based on the number of doors and coats.
